Born in 1960 in Aachen, Germany. After his school graduation (Abitur) he trained as a carpenter in Aachen from 1979-82. 1982-84, alternative to military service in the children's day care dept. of a centre for the homeless. 1984-91, study of film and video at the DFFB, Berlin. Since 1991, freelance director, scriptwriter, cameraman. Georg Maas has realised films for ZDF (Kleines Fernsehspiel), kanal 4 and WDR.

Georg Maas realises themes from his own social environment in documentary and feature films, video works, film portraits and occasionally also in music videos, whereby he introduces a surreal, fictive note by means of trick interludes, thus creating a new dimensionin the real story. In his trilogy IRRSINN DES ALLTAGS (1986-88) he attempts to realise experiences from the world of work in an artistic way. His motto is man as a working machine, he aims for a critical illumination of daily repeated monotony. In part I, EIN NORMALES LEBEN (1986), the dominant creative means is sound processing. Part II 10 3/4ZOLL (1987) was realised completely in video; images and sounds were recorded live at a place of work, broken down into scraps of picture and sound, and then mounted in a new, rhythmic way by the artist to create video music. A computer was used to recompose images and sounds into larger units. In this way, specific rhythms are created. A catalogue of existing sequences of images and sounds was assembled in advance and provided the basic equipment for working out the composition, which was calculated precisely according to the length of beats with a metronome. In addition to the tape, there are two versions of 10 3/4 ZOLL for computer-controlled monitor walls with either 96 or 24 monitors. Part 3, like Part 1, is a 16mm film primarily produced at the trick table,employing optical effects and the technique of multiple exposure. Georg Maas sees the various media as tools which can be selected and used according to the nature of his task. The outcome is often mixed forms, whereby he takes particular care with his use of music.(Video-Forum, Neuer Berliner Kunstverein 2001)
