"Isabelle Eberhardt, provocatrice de la fin de l'ère victorienne, écrivain et poète, a quitté Genève pour l'Algérie, s'est convertie à l'islam, a voyagé travestie en homme, a repoussé les limites de l'annihilation (buvant, fumant, baisant), et est morte à l'âge de 27 ans. Il s'agit d'une biographie éclatée et d'un anti `travelogue'. Leslie Thornton fait appel au texte, aux photos, elle recrée des scènes, utilise des extraits de Pépé le Moko, ainsi que des séquences d'actualités du Sahara et de la marche sur la lune, par ces moyens, elle mène son histoire dans deux directions, espérant donner l'intensité immédiate de l'expérience d'Eberhardt et de pister cette expérience en relation avec les questions de l'identité sexuelle, du colonialisme et de la représentation." This experimental work presents a fragmented biography of the 19th-century poet and writer Isabelle Eberhardt, whose brief, unusual life ended abruptly in a flash flood in the desert. The tape makes no claims to telling the "truth" about Isabelle, picking up rumors of her tyrannical, nihilistic father and her flight to Armenia, where she dressed as a man and, "Wrote one of the strangest documents a woman has ever given to the world." Following Eberhardt's travels and the strangely syncretic vision of her father, Thornton gives a portrait of cultural cross-breeding in which, "Neither this world nor the other remains." In all, There Was An Unseen Cloud Moving is an arresting mixture of rare and iconic images that undermines its authenticity through re-enacted "historical" scenes and deliberate anachronisms that place Neil Armstrong in 19th Century Geneva.
