synopsis: Video Data Bank, Chicago
Mary Kelly was born in 1941. She studied painting in Florence, Italy, where she received her MA degree. Kelly's work was at the fore of a wave of intellectually and politically motivated critical feminist artwork and art theory of the 1970s. Since that time her work has consistently concerned issues and methods of activist politics, psychoanalysis, political science, literature, and the history of women and gender. Kelly received recognition in the early 1980s for her epic, six -year project, The Post Partum Document, a mixed-media work chronicling the development of her and her son through the first six years of his life. Kelly says her work revolves "around the recurring themes of body, money, history and power."
