- 1 July 1990, the day of the German currency union. The free market economy is introduced in the still-existing GDR with the DM. Overnight, advertising billboards are unveiled and shop-windows are filled with displays. On Alexanderplatz in Berlin, an unusual triumphant celebration takes place.
